Easing the Back-to-School Transition

As the long summer days begin to wind down, many families start to feel the excitement—and anxiety—that comes with the return to school. For some children, going back to school is a welcome return to routine and friends. For others, it can bring feelings of worry, uncertainty or even fear.

Whether your child is starting school for the first time or simply returning after a break, a smooth transition is possible with some planning, patience and support. 

Start the Routine Early

One of the best ways to ease the transition is by gradually reintroducing school routines a week or two before the first day. Start moving bedtimes and wake-up times closer to the school schedule. Practice morning and evening routines so your child feels more comfortable when school starts.

Talk About Feelings

Children often feel a mix of emotions about returning to school—nervousness about new teachers, excitement to see friends or sadness about the end of summer. Encourage your child to share what they’re feeling, and validate and normalize those emotions. Try saying: “It’s okay to feel nervous about going back to school. Lots of kids feel that way. Do you want to talk about what’s on your mind?”

Make Time to Visit the School

If possible, attend back-to-school events like open houses or orientation days. If your child is starting at a new school, take a walk around the building, find the classroom, and practice the route they’ll take. Familiarity can reduce anxiety and build confidence.

Create a Calm-Down Plan

For children who are prone to anxiety, having a “calm-down plan” can be helpful and help them feel more in control. This might include:

• A short breathing exercise
• A small comfort item in their backpack
• A reminder that they can talk to their teacher or school counselor

Model a Positive Attitude

Children often take emotional cues from adults. While it’s normal to have your own feelings about the school transition, try to express positivity and confidence. Reassure your child that they can handle this change, and that you’re there to support them every step of the way.

Keep Communication Open

After school starts, check in with your child regularly. These conversations can help you catch any early signs of stress and provide ongoing support. Ask open-ended questions like:

• “What was the best part of your day?”
• “Did anything today make you feel worried or upset?”
• “What’s something new you learned?”
